MotoGP » MotoGP Italy: Rossi’s Mugello 'dream' goes up in smoke
22 May 2016
"In English they say 'shit happens'!" - Valentino Rossi.
Valentino Rossi's hopes of a first home Italian MotoGP victory since 2008 went up in smoke at Mugello on Sunday.
The home star had been supported by yellow smoke from the passionate fans packing the hillsides all weekend. But the sight of white clouds spewing from his factory Yamaha on lap 9 of 23 marked a disastrous second DNF of the season.
The Doctor admitted the outcome was especially disappointing given he had enjoyed his most competitive Mugello showing in years.
Starting from pole for the first time since 2008, when he took the last of seven successive wins, Rossi shadowed team-mate and eventual race winner Jorge Lorenzo from the start - close enough to attack at any moment.
"What can I say? Difficult to say something. I mean is a great shame, is always a great shame when you have a technical failure in the race," Rossi began.
"But this time was also more because we are in Mugello and have a fantastic atmosphere with a lot of fans, and especially because I was very strong all weekend and in the race. I felt good with the bike and was very fast.
"So for sure I can fight for the victory at Mugello that is - more than a target - one of my dreams in the last ten years. Because the last victory was 2008.
"Today in the race I was very fast. And I was behind Lorenzo, but sincerely I think that I had a little bit better pace compared to him, so I can for sure try to attack and try to make my race. But unfortunately the engine broke.
“This one feels very 'heavy', because it was from Misano 2007 that my bike don't break in the race. Nine years.
“Unfortunately on lap six, the bike start to have a problem and the clutch didn't open, maybe because the engine already start to seize a little bit. It is for that reason that I go wide. But in seven-eight corners I was already back on Lorenzo, because I was a little bit faster, but after the engine broke.”
Rossi's engine problem wasn't a complete surprise; Lorenzo had suffered what looked like an identical failure in morning warm-up, raising concerns of an inherent design weakness that may be tough for Yamaha to fix given the freeze on engine development.
“I think there was the same thing wrong in both engines, but the big difference is that Lorenzo's happened in the warm-up and for me it happened in the race,” Rossi commented.
Mugello has the fastest straight on the MotoGP calendar, with Ducati's Andrea Iannone setting a new all-time top speed record of 354.9km/h (220.5mph) in Sunday's race.
Modifications, for safety purposes, are only allowed if there is unanimous consent among the MSMA MotoGP Commission, which would need to be convinced that the changes offer no performance benefit. But such permission has never previously been granted.
The difficulty is that if a weak part is replaced with a stronger component for example - which then allows the engine to run 'safely' at maximum rpm - that in itself is a performance benefit. 'Just lower the rpm to a safe level', might be a typical response from rival manufacturers.
For such reasons, the example given in the rules is for 'a faulty batch of parts, with supporting documentation from the parts supplier to identify the problem'. If Yamaha's Mugello issues match that precise description they may have a chance of being granted a modification.
Both Rossi and Lorenzo began Sunday having 'opened' three of the seven engines allowed for this season, all of which must be of identical spec.
Lorenzo went on to claim his third victory of the season after a last-lap duel with Marc Marquez, and now holds a ten-point lead over the Honda rider. Rossi remains third, but has now dropped 37-points from the top.
"It's a great shame also for the championship, because I take the 'zero' and Lorenzo and Marquez arrive first and second, so now the distance from the top is 37 points. Is very bad. Is quite a big gap," Rossi admitted.
"But I think this weekend I did my job at the maximum. I ride well, I was always concentrating and I arrived ready for fight for the victory in the race. In English they say 'shit happens'! This is today. It is like this, but is very important to be strong and try to take from this bad moment extra energy for the next race in Barcelona."

MotoGP » MotoGP Italy: Lorenzo: I proved I've got stomach for a fight
22 May 2016
'Today I can win with not the best pace and with not starting from the pole position, so it's another motive to shut up a little bit the people who criticise' - Jorge Lorenzo.
The Movistar Yamaha rider locked horns with Marc Marquez on the final lap and narrowly came out on top, drafting past the Repsol Honda on the main straight to cross the line to seal victory by 0.019 seconds.
Lorenzo said: “People who don't like you will find any motive to criticise you, but I won many races starting from the back, having a bad start and recovering a lot of positions and winning finally in the last lap: I did it in 125 and in 250 and in my first years in MotoGP when I didn't start well.
“But obviously when you start well and you have a great first lap and second lap, why would you not take this strong point as a benefit? Today I can win with not the best pace and with not starting from the pole position, so it's another motive to shut up a little bit the people who criticise without remembering the history or statistics.”
Although he rates his win in the Italian MotoGP as one of his best, Lorenzo still feels his best premier class triumph was at Silverstone in 2013, when he defeated Marquez by 0.081 seconds.
“Your last victory fighting is always the best one because it's difficult to have memories in the past. I've been lucky to win races fighting and have exciting battles with a lot of riders in the past, for example I will never forget my first victory in Brazil in 2003 with this unbelievable last lap,” he said.
“And in MotoGP, my fight with Marc in Silverstone, but for me this one is quite close, but Silverstone is always my best in MotoGP.
“Finally we got a battle in the last laps, some journalists say this year we didn't see this battle and finally it's nice to have this in MotoGP again.”
Lorenzo admitted he was fortunate to have stayed upright after a near-miss on the straight when he touched Marquez, revealing that he apologised to the Honda rider after the race.
“At the end of the straight, normally in the braking you put the foot on the gearbox before closing the throttle to shift down the first gear when you close the throttle,” he said.
“Marc was very close and we touched a little bit and we've been lucky not to touch more and crash there because it would've been a disaster. I said to him 'sorry' because I change a little bit the way I put the foot on the gearbox and this could create a big problem.”
The reigning world champion says he blocked out the intimidating atmosphere at Valentino Rossi's home circuit and added that although he will ride for Ducati at Mugello in 2017, he still expects the circuit to be 'mostly yellow'.
“I don't care what the reaction of the people is; they have the theory of Rossi from last year and they buy this thing and we are like the enemies,” he said.
“I have similar reaction every year and I go here and just focus and make a good race every year. I hear that Ducati fans are very happy that I signed for them so I feel a lot of support from them, but I believe also next year the circuit will be mostly yellow, so I think it will keep the same treatment but we will see,” Lorenzo added.
“Obviously today I was very lucky to break in the warm-up and not in the race and Rossi for the opposite, was very unlucky.
“It's a weird situation because in just a few hours we broke two engines and we don't know the motives or what happened and Yamaha needs to investigate what is happening and if it's possible to sort in the future.
“I think today he has a good pace and I was told that on the TV it looks like he stayed quite comfortable after my wheels, so today he could stay there and maybe fight for the victory so he was unlucky.”

MotoGP » MotoGP Italy: Marquez: We're right in the hunt for title
22 May 2016
'We are there in the championship and 10 points are not a big difference. Of course I would like to be in front but we are there' - Marc Marquez.
Marc Marquez said he remains right in the hunt for the MotoGP World Championship after a narrow defeat at the hands of Jorge Lorenzo in a red-hot race at Mugello.
Marquez led onto the final straight but was outgunned by Lorenzo's Yamaha M1 on the blast to the line, losing out by 0.019 seconds.
Lorenzo extended his lead at the top to 10 points over Marquez ahead of the seventh round of the championship at Catalunya on June 5, but the Honda rider says he remains firmly in the title mix.
“Today, I feel what it is like to lose the race in the last 50 metres, because all my career I never felt,” said Marquez.
“I did a really good race because this one of the circuits where always I struggle more. I'm happy because we finished second and really close to the victory. We did a great last lap and honestly I forgot the championship and I say 'attack'.
“I feel like this but like always we are losing a little bit in acceleration and when I arrived in the last corner, I tried to close but also to prepare my exit because I know that Lorenzo is able to overtake me before the finish line,” he added.
“During all the race I was in his slipstream and I never catch him completely. I could catch him on the last lap because he did a mistake with the gear on the first corner, but I tried to be there and I think it was a great show for all the fans,” Marquez added.
“We are there in the championship and 10 points are not a big difference. Of course I would like to be in front but we are there.”
Marquez admits he was left feeling frustrated after losing out on the dash to the line as acceleration continues to be the Honda's Achilles heal in 2016, but the 23-year-old remains confident HRC will make significant improvements soon.
“You feel frustrated but already when I arrive in parc ferme [Shuhei] Nakamoto and all the Honda staff thank me for the race because they know that we are struggling,” he said.
“We are working 100 per-cent to try to improve and I cannot say nothing because I know they are working really hard, but yes – I did a really good last lap and normally always face to face with another rider I am strong.
“But this time I lose on the straight, it never happened [before] and the only time it happened was here and also in Qatar. But in the end we know that it is our weak point at the moment but we will improve on the future,” he added.
“I'm happy because before the race if you say to me, 'you will finish second and lose only five points', I will say, 'where do I need to sign?'”
Marquez conceded that Valentino Rossi had been unlucky to retire from the race while lying second with an engine failure, but said it was imperative to capitalise on any opportunities that may arise.
“Of course Valentino was unlucky but in the end you must take profit about this because you never know what will happen in the future, if this luck will come back to him or not,” said Marquez, who said he muted his celebrations on the podium in front of Rossi's partisan fans.
“The reaction of course was not the best one and for that reason I don't celebrate a lot on the podium because I don't like this, but in the end – okay, all the circuit was yellow, this is true – but I think all the circuit enjoyed the last lap and the show and this is the most important.”
Marquez reflected on his near-miss when Lorenzo's Yamaha slowed suddenly on the straight while he was tucked into his slipstream, causing him to catch his elbow protection as the pair touched.
“Always I was struggling on the slipstream and suddenly I saw that Lorenzo's bike stop and I didn't know what happened,” he said.
“The bit that you see [coming off] was my elbow protection that went out, but I was planning to attack on the first corner already and this created a little bit of confusion.
“Then, after this, everything was normal but yes from the back it was scary but lucky that we don't crash because I crashed already one time there and it was hard.”

MotoGP » MotoGP Italy: Iannone 'had pace to fight for victory'
22 May 2016
'Today I had a very good pace to fight with Marc and Jorge and why not? I can beat today for sure, because for all the race my pace is very strong' - Andrea Iannone.
Andrea Iannone was left to reflect on what might have been as the Ducati MotoGP rider blew his start before battling back to take the final place on the rostrum at Mugello.
Iannone had topped the free practice time sheets in the dry and qualified third fastest on the front row in Italy, but he made a poor start to leave himself languishing in 11th place at the end of the opening lap.
The Italian rider fought his way through and became locked in a battle for the last spot on the rostrum with Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa.
Iannone – who established a new top speed record at Mugello of 220.5mph on the Desmosedici GP16 – posted the fastest lap of the race on his final lap to keep Pedrosa at bay, making amends for the disappointment of his tumble in the previous race at Le Mans.
“I'm very happy because it's important for us, especially in this race, the podium is always a good performance,” Iannone said.
“I have a very big disappointment for the start because it was very bad. After the first lap I saw 11th position and it's very difficult to recover the gap to Dovi and Dani and also for Marc.
“After three or four laps, step by step I improved my pace and I'm very happy for this because I showed a very good, consistent pace – a very fast pace for all the race.
“In the last lap, I gave my best lap of 1m 46.6 and it's important for us, especially for the future,” he added.
“Today we have a very good potential to fight for the victory and this for me is very important and I wanted, but for sure we will try in the next races.”
Reflecting on his poor start, Iannone said he has been struggling to get the Ducati off the line all season.
“This year in all races my start is very bad and I don't have a very good feeling with the clutch. We tried to adjust this problem and change the setting in the clutch – my team worked a lot and also Ducati to improve the situation but for me, always is very difficult,” he said.
“This weekend I have a little bit more positivity because all the weekend I tried the start and it is very good, but in the race not, unfortunately. It's important that we are strong and I ride for all the race at the maximum and this is very important for me and the future.”
The 26-year-old said he felt his pace was strong enough to challenge Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez for the win, but Iannone was satisfied at least to make it onto the podium in Italy on the Ducati.
“Today I had a very good pace to fight with Marc and Jorge and why not? I can beat today for sure, because for all the race my pace is very strong but in the battle, I don't know,” he said.
“I have the same pace as Jorge and Marc and the podium is a very important one for us after the last race and it is important to close this weekend with a good result.
“It is very important for everybody in Italy, for me, for Ducati and I want to continue the season in this way because I have a very good relationship with the team.”

MotoGP » MotoGP Italy: Dovizioso: Podium charge stifled by arm pump
22 May 2016
'I'm not smooth on the bike and I feel too much energy and I have the problem of arm pump, so I wasn't able to push the lap time' - Andrea Dovizioso.
Andrea Dovizioso felt was left to rue arm pump problems as the Ducati rider saw his hopes of a rostrum finish at Mugello fade as Sunday's race progressed.
Dovizioso made a brilliant start from 15th place on the GP16 to slot into third as he gave chase to Movistar Yamaha riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.
However, the Italian was unable to maintain his pace and was caught by team-mate Andrea Iannone and Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa in the final part of the race, eventually finishing in fifth place.
“I am happy about the start because I did a great start and a great first lap, so I am happy because I did what I had to do,” Dovi said.
“I was in the right position and the first half of the race was really good, but still I'm not smooth on the bike and I feel too much energy and I have the problem of arm pump, so I wasn't able to push the lap time.
“Mugello is one of the hardest tracks and when you have the arm pump you can't be aggressive in the braking, but especially to stay on the limit, front and rear: the grip today was really low because the temperature today was really hot,” he added.
“I tried everything I could in the last eight laps but I went wide in turn 1 and I wasn't precise. Unfortunately I couldn't use my speed so I'm so sorry for the team.”
Dovizioso feels a rostrum was well within his reach and has taken the positives from the weekend ahead of the next round at Catalunya in Spain, although he is still seeking a set-up that will make the Desmosedici easier to ride.
“The weekend started very bad but practice by practice we improved the situation and also in the warm-up we improved a little bit,” he said.
“We had the pace to fight for the podium and in MotoGP I think it is something nice, but anyway I finished fifth and the positive thing is we finished the race and for sure we had the possibility to finish on the podium.
“My feeling with the bike is good, we are fast and we are able to improve practice by practice. I am happy about how we worked during the weekend but I think we need something from the bike to be easier, not faster, but easier,” he added.
“This is my objective for the future because we have the speed, which is really good, but we need something in a few areas to really stay there in many races, not just in one race like Qatar.”
His fifth row start made life difficult for Dovizioso but he had taken heart from his performance on the opening laps.
“For sure to start in front and start with them makes a difference because you can manage everything for 23 laps,” he said.
“But I started very back and I was nervous about that, so in the first five laps I had to push a lot and [try] not to lose the first three riders.
“Like I said, we have good potential but now we have to be focused to have the same speed in an easy way.
“I struggle with arm pump for a lot of years but sometimes it is big, sometimes not so big and you can manage: the difference is always how fast you are and especially how smooth you are.”

Re: MotoGP 2016
Vinales expects smooth switch from Suzuki to Yamaha
24 May 2016
Having recently confirmed his move to Movistar Yamaha for next year, Maverick Vinales is confident of a smooth transition from Suzuki machinery as he feels the two share similar bike characteristics.
The Spanish rider was confirmed at Mugello as Valentino Rossi's new team-mate at the factory Yamaha squad for 2017 after Jorge Lorenzo confirmed he will switch to Ducati at the end of the season.
In a behind-the-scenes video with Alpinestars into Vinales' life away from MotoGP, the 21-year-old says he's already relishing the prospect of getting to grips with the Yamaha M1 machine and feels the transition should be a quick one as the two manufacturers share similar bike traits.
“With the Suzuki I am always on the limit and you have to be otherwise the bike starts to shake and it makes it difficult to keep going fast,” Vinales said. “The development of the bike is about my riding style but with the Yamaha it is always on a great level so any rider on the bike is always fast.
“It is not such a different style of the Yamaha to the Suzuki because you need to be smooth and round on the corners to go fast. Normally the secret is on the gas, you need to be so focused.
“Normally with the electronics you don't go fast so you need to use less electronics as you can, less traction control, because it normally destroys the tyre so you need to feel the spinning on the gas.
“The biggest difference for me compared to the Yamaha is that Yamaha has incredible traction from the engine which is more important now with the Michelins which are hard and spin a lot.”
Vinales also sees the future of MotoGP being between himself and Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez in the battle for world championships. In 2013 Vinales claimed his maiden world title with the Moto3 championship while Marquez grabbed a historic first MotoGP world crown in his rookie year in the premier class.
“If things continue like this I think Marc [Marquez] and I are going to be the future and the ones that are going to be battling at the end of the races,” he said. “I would like to battle with him because normally it looks like it is difficult to beat him but he is always on the limit with the bike.
“If you have a good bike and can push him over the limit normally he crashes. This a point that if you play you can have a chance to make him lose points.”
